My daughter is an art major and has been enjoying her fiber arts class very much this semester. The focus has been heavy on dyeing fabrics. Now that the semester is nearing the end they are using some unique techniques.
She’s so creative though, that we didn’t even bat an eye when she told us she needed something rusty. My husband had seen some rusted metal behind his mom’s house so after a quick trip there, she got to work!
If you want to try this you will need the following items:
- White cotton fabric
- Rusted metal
- Equal amounts of water and white vinegar
- Container for liquid solution
- Large Ziploc bag
- Rubber Bands
The rusty metal! 
50/50 vinegar water mix 
Wet white cotton bandana wrapped around rusty metal.
She is using several different techniques to dye fabric right now. Her plan is to put them all together to make a Coronavirus themed quilt. If she does, I’ll be sure to post it. This is such an interesting technique! While I’m not crazy about rust itself, the colour is quite pretty and unique so I can see the appeal to this style of fabric dyeing!

This is very different! I am a dry cleaner so usually rust and fabric are what my nightmares are made of. But for the first time I am actually happy to see rust and fabric together!

I thought it was cool. I never would have thought of it.
I will try this later this week and will take note of this. Hopefully, I can do this too since i’m really bad at following instructions and for some reasons I messed up things for not following this instructions.
