Exploring the Woolly Days Festival: A Trip to the Past

Our ancestors were amazing. I visited a festival this weekend (another weekend, another festival). It was near my home on the grounds of a 200 year old farm. It is called the Woolly Days Festival because they demonstrate sheep shearing. I didn’t get any pictures of that but I did get some shots of the sheep. Interestingly enough, when they were “baa”ing, they sounded more like a person trying to sound like a sheep than an actual sheep.

One of the first demonstrations that we saw was candle making.

The gardens there were beautiful. In the herb garden there is a flat rock next to each plant. It had the name of the plant on it and ‘C’ if it is used for cooking, an ‘M’ if it is medicinal, or an ‘H’ if it is used in other ways in the home.

We toured the various houses/rooms and watched demonstrations from life 200 years ago.

I took my mother and my aunt for Mother’s Day. We had a good time walking and learning. They tired out pretty quickly so we only stayed for a couple of hours. We also shopped at the vendor booths and tasted homemade apple butter, strawberry butter, pumpkin butter, and molasses on fresh biscuits. Yum!

  1. I’ll have to watch for this next year. My wardrobe, including shoes & undies/bras, is 85% wool now. 10% is cotton, hemp, flannel, or linen and 5% synthetics.
