Last year I decided I was going to start cutting out added sugars and reducing the amount of red meat that I eat. For my final paper in my nutrition class I researched the Mediterranean diet. Are you familiar with it? If not, read on.
The Mediterranean diet is a healthy diet that is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). It’s not a specific diet but is based on the traditional diets of people from the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It is important to note that the focus of the diet is plants. It centers around fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes, whole grains, olive oil, nuts, and seeds. Red meat is very limited, but fatty fish, such as tuna, sardines, mackerel, trout, and salmon, as well as chicken are eaten moderately, as are dairy products. Physical activity and a daily glass of red wine (if you drink alcohol) are also included. Healthy fats are important and saturated and trans fats, which contribute to cardiovascular disease, are avoided. Health monosaturated fats are found in olive oil, seeds, and nuts.
For my paper I researched various articles and found that this diet is thought to fight against heart disease, cancer, diabetes, as well as various other conditions. I personally believe the lack of red meat probably has the most to do with it. Anyway, I’m embracing the Mediterranean lifestyle in 2021 and focusing on healthy eating that revolves around fruits and vegetables. Today I had a thick and filling smoothie. I just love my Nutribullet! The recipe is below.
“Start The Day Off Right” Smoothie!
- Almond milk (to desired thickness) I use unsweetened
- One banana
- Oats (I used about 1/4 cup)
- Blueberries (Again, about 1/4 cup)
- Mix until smooth and enjoy!
I hope you try this and love it as much as I did. It’s all natural and very filling. Have a safe and prosperous 2021!
