Being Neighborly

Daily writing prompt
What makes a good neighbor?

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over Crabapple Street, I found myself sitting on the porch of my new home, a modest little house that had seen better days. Moving to a new town felt daunting, but as I inhaled the fresh scent of blooming lilacs and listened to children’s laughter echoing in the distance, I hoped that this place would offer me a sense of belonging.

My first few weeks were spent unpacking boxes and adjusting to the rhythm of a quieter life. I often waved at my neighbors, but it wasn’t until a rainy Saturday afternoon that their kindness truly shone. I had planned to spend the day painting the shabby front door, but the storm clouds rolled in faster than I anticipated. Just as I resigned myself to a day indoors, an unexpected knock startled me.

Standing on my porch was Mrs. Jennings, an elderly woman with a warm smile and a basket of freshly baked cookies. “I saw you were working hard and thought you could use a treat!” she said, her eyes twinkling like the raindrops around us. I invited her in, and we spent the next hour chatting over cookies and coffee. Her stories of Crabapple’s history and her late husband’s adventures filled the room with laughter, and I felt an instant connection. This is the moment I realized what a true blessing it is to have friendly, caring neighbors.
