Vinegar Hill by A Manette Ansay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I try not to post spoilers in case anyone wants to read the book on their own. However, if you click on the rating link above, it may give a little bit away.
I believe this is the first book that I have read from Oprah’s book club, but from what I am seeing online she isn’t known for recommending books that are sweet and sappy. Be forewarned this is neither sweet OR sappy. It is, however, a very interesting read. I found myself rushing through whatever I happened to be working on so that I could get back to this story. I was rooting for Ellen from the beginning even though I just wanted to grab her and shake her several times.
If toxic family dynamics are your thing then pull up a chair and grap a cup of tea because you’re going to want to get comfortable. The fact is there are unhappy people in the world, some of whom thrive on taking others down with them into their pit of despair. Unhappy relationships are a reality and difficult choices sometimes have to be made. There are a lot of negative reviews about this book, but I remained involved in the story until the end and found it very interesting and quite entertaining. The writing was solid and I don’t think it should be judged so harshly just because it doesn’t have a Hallmark script. If that’s what you want find another book. I could, as always, have done without the language.
